Microneedling For Face and Body

Microneedling For Face and Body
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a safe and effective skin-rejuvenating treatment for all skin types. Microscopic needles are used to penetrate the skin at different depths, which ‘wakes up’ the skin and stimulates the skin’s natural healing mechanism. This healing response leads to the production of new collagen and elastin, helping to restore the skin’s firmness, smoothness, and elasticity. For this reason the treatment is sometimes called ‘collagen induction therapy’.

As collagen levels decrease by about 1% a year from the age of 25 onwards, it is a popular choice for anyone concerned about skin rejuvenation. A 2008 study, carried out by a plastic reconstructive surgeon, showed an impressive increase in localised skin collagen production by up to 400% (4 sessions of microneedling, each 1 month apart).

Microneedling also causes the skin to form new blood vessels, which provides it with nutrients and oxygen, giving the complexion a youthful and healthier glow. It also works to even out skin tone by breaking down scar tissue, pigmentation spots, and stretch marks.

In addition to stimulating skin renewal, microneedling creates micro-channels that allow for the increased absorption of specialised skin serums, which delivered deeper into the skin are able to perform at their best.

As the needle depth is relatively superficial, the procedure itself isn’t painful, although some find it a little uncomfortable around the lip and on bonier areas like the forehead. Blood spots (if any) are usually few and far between, and those that do occur are tiny (pin-prick size) and quick to heal (typically within seconds).

What are the benefits of Microneedling?
For microneedling to achieve results, the correct needle depth must be used. Our treatments therefore include a thorough consultation to determine the appropriate depth of treatment for your skin’s needs, enabling us to properly target your specific skin issues.

In-clinic microneedling has the ability to:
  • Induce collagen and elastin production.
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Firm and tighten loose skin, including the neck.
  • Improve the skin texture and tone, leaving it smooth and even.
  • Improve skin elasticity.
  • Plump and re-thicken thin skin.
  • Improve the appearance of enlarged pores.
  • Improve the appearance of scars (e.g. from acne, surgery, and chickenpox).
  • Improve the appearance of stretch marks on the thighs, abdomen, hips, arms, etc.
  • Reduce the appearance of age spots, hyperpigmentation and sun damage.
  • Enhance the skin’s ability to absorb products.
  • Brighten dull and lifeless complexions.

Home Microneedling
For microneedling to safely achieve results, the correct depth of needle must be used; too deep and there is a risk of causing undesirable skin damage, too shallow and the treatment won’t induce the many wonderful benefits of needling. For this reason it is not advised for home use.

However, at the Rowan Tree we do retail a 0.3mm micro-roller for at-home use. These needles are shorter than those needed to induce collagen production, but have the ability to improve the skin’s glow and increase product absorption by up to 80%. This will enable you to boost the results obtained by your skincare and professional at-home products. Micro-rollers can be used from 3 days after a microneedling treatment, and can be used twice a week for six weeks over your anti-ageing serum before they need replacing.

Microneedling Treatments
All microneedling treatments include a thorough consultation to determine the suitable depth of needling
Our microneedles are sterilised with gamma irradiation, and a new one is used for each client.

As microneedling works by stimulating a natural mechanism of the skin – its effects being produced entirely by your body’s own natural processes - the improvements are gradual and accumulative. Results are typically seen 2 to 3 weeks after the first treatment, with the skin continuing to improve for up to 12 weeks after.

For best results a minimum course of 3-6 sessions (one a month) is needed, although just one or two treatments are often sufficient for younger skins. Once this initial course is completed, results are maintained by a top-up treatment every 3 to 5 months, depending upon your skin’s age and condition. However, those who are particularly concerned about the visible signs of ageing may have the treatment every 4-6 weeks if desired.

For body treatments, most concerns will require 6-12 monthly treatments to show signs of improvement.

Numbing Cream
If you wish to use numbing cream, this needs to be applied at home, at least 30 mins before treatment. However, as the effect wears off quickly once wiped away, numbing cream is most effective with 30 minute microneedling facials. Numbing creams can be purchased from a reputable pharmacist.

Does It Cause The Skin To Bleed?
To induce the skin to create new collagen it is NOT necessary to penetrate the skin to a depth that causes bleeding, despite popular images on social media etc.

These images are either used for sensationalism (with the intention of getting more people to view and share them), and/or because the person posting the images is not educated in the latest micro-needling techniques.

Science has shown us that new collagen forms no deeper than 0.6mm, regardless of depth of injury. Needling beyond that depth is not necessary for the purposes of stimulating collagen production. The idea needling only works if you bleed is very outdated thinking, and not something you would hear from an experienced and educated practitioner. Moreover, by only needling as deep as is necessary, it makes the treatment far more comfortable!
