Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is gentle, flowing and rhythmic massage with powerful cleansing, relaxing, pain-relieving, and immunological effects. This gentle yet powerful form of massage  has a number of health benefits and can be applied to a wide range of physical conditions to great effect.

How does it work?
The body's lymphatic system works alongside the circulatory system. One of its main functions is immune defence and it also works to remove waste products, cellular debris and bacteria from the body.

Due to illness and lifestyle, the lymphatic system can become 'sluggish'. MLD techniques facilitate the removal of metabolic wastes, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules, and foreign substances from tissue via the lymph vessels and the venous capillaries. MLD also relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain, and enhances the activity of the immune system.
What can it help with?
MLD is effective in the treatment of a wide variety of problems including:
  • Oedema (swelling)
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Skin disorders
  • Headache
  • Sinus congestion
  • Sprains and aches
  • Stress
  • Digestive disorders
  • Before and after surgery to remove tissue congestion and minimise scar formation.
It is particularly useful as part of post-mastectomy therapy, to reduce oedema and fibrosis, and to relieve pain and tension. With agreement from your specialist, MLD can also be used soon after active cancer treatment when regular massage is often still contraindicated.

What can I expect?
MLD massage is delivered through clothes and is a very light-touch massage. The treatment involves stimulation
of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, abdomen and legs along with gentle draining movements along the arms
and legs interspersed with deep breathing techniques. It is a whole-body treatment; at least one entire circuit of the
body will always be performed with a second circuit allowing particular attention to be paid to problem areas.
The client lies face up throughout so it is also good for clients with limited mobility.

How often should I have MLD?
There is no strict answer! Treatment regularity can depend on your current state of health and lifestyle. MLD massage
can be had as a one-off treatment, however for general health benefits it is recommended to have treatment every
4-6 weeks. If you have specific problems such as oedema it may be beneficial to have MLD massage more often. In
extreme cases at the start of a treatment regime it may be necessary to have treatment as often as three times per
week.

Other points to note:
If you have certain health conditions it may be necessary to gain agreement from your specialist before receiving
MLD massage. These include:

  • Cancer
  • Acute heart or circulatory disorders
  • Acute inflammation or cellulitis
  • Recent history of thrombosis
  • Renal failure
